“21, and Another One, and Another One, and Another One…”

DJ Stretch Armstrong
A: Stretch Armstrong

(Q: What extra large NYC-based DJ produced “Big Momma Thang”, the lead-off gem from Lil Kim’s debut album Hard Core?)

One half of the legendary New York radio duo Stretch & Bobbito, and original party DJ to the “bottles & models” crowd, the 6′ 7″ Stretch Armstrong also produced “Big Momma Thang”. “Big Momma Thang” (featuring Jay-Z) was arguably the best song on Lil’ Kim’s Hard Core debut (ed.: don’t forget about “Queen B@#$H“). Certainly it was the best non-single.

Anyway Stretch & Bob had the best hip-hop radio show of all time, on Columbia University’s WKCR FM from 1990 to 1998. They actually mixed records, they played B-sides and remixes, and had a cast of supporting characters (Lord Sear, Kurious, etc.) that made the studio banter alone worth tuning in to. It didn’t hurt that future stars like Nas, Jay-Z, and 50 Cent would stop by on the regular to drop freestyles. Even the legendary Quincy Jones put in a too-tipsy-to-care-it-was-just-college-radio appearance.
